Galileo was an Italian astronomer and physicist. He was accused of committing heresy and was sentenced a life in prison. Luckily, he had plenty of friends in the Inquisition, who were the jury, so he got a pretty good deal. The reason he was accused in the first place was for disagreeing with Aristotle, who said that the earth was at the center of the universe, and everything revolved around it. Galileo liked to question ideas, to have proof. He didn't believe Aristotle. He believed a man named Copernicus, who said all the planets revolved around the Sun. That got the church mad, because Aristotle's ideas agreed with what the church thought too. Copernicus was saying that Earth was equal to the other planets, but according to their religion, we were supposed to be more special because God created us. Galileo agreed with Copernicus, so the church thought he was disagreeing with them. Because of his friends though, he didn't get a death sentence at his trial.
